Mourning Admiral Charles Austen

The man mourned here is Jane Austen's younger brother Charles, not Jane. He died while commanding British naval forces in Burma in 1852. An unnamed person who was with him remembered the fleet's grief and his own tears. The Memoir, pp. 14–15 gives a longer quotation praising Charles's kindness. This is testimony quoted by later biographers; the recipient is unidentified.
