An extract about missing Trafalgar

This is a short extract from Frank Austen's letter to his fiancée Mary Gibson. Jane's brother fears that his ship's absence from Nelson's fleet will cost him the chance to take part in a decisive battle. The passage belongs to the 21 October continuation of the longer letter about Trafalgar. The older biography interrupts the quotation with its own narration, which accounts for the break after “I do not profess”.

Francis William Austen to Mary Gibson
OCT 21, 1805

I do not profess,

to like fighting for its own sake, but if there has been an action with the combined fleets I shall ever consider the day on which I sailed from the squadron as the most inauspicious one of my life.
